Today we are going to take a look at where advertising was and how the ads of yesteryear hold up with today’s standards. Looking over these retro ads, I am sure you’ll be able to find new ideas on how you can advertise your own design business. At the very least there’s some in here that’ll give you a good laugh.
There’s a few things I noticed when going through all of these vintage ads that aren’t very surprising, but still interesting to make note of for your future design/marketing efforts.
- Sex Sells – Obviously. This is something that hasn’t changed and never will. You can’t utilize sex to sell every product, but where ever someone can, they will.
- Make the ad about the person reading it – You will see the word “You” utilized a lot in the ads, because it helps the ad speak directly to the person they’re advertising to.
- A catchy phrase will always work to your advantage – Slogans and catch phrases shouldn’t be anything new to you, but as you can see from these retro ads, the ones that stand out the most to you are probably the ones with the catchiest copy.
- Buzz words were just as “in” before as they are now – You see certain themes when looking over ads in the list that are advertising cigarettes, or soda. The word “Light” appears a lot in food/drink ads, while cigarette ads talk a lot about how they’re “good on the throat”.
